Behind the Scenes Days

Behind the Scenes Days

Event Date: 9th September 2018- 9th September 2018

A rare chance to see how it all works, and meet the team. The perfect visit for potential volunteers!

In the shed: Port of Par, 4612, 6435

Our final Behind the Scenes Day of the year is a Heritage Open Day event.

Heritage Open Days is England's largest festival of history and culture, bringing together over 2,500 organisations, 5,000 events and 40,000 volunteers. Every year over four days in September, places across the country throw open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community and history. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s FREE to come and explore the railway (although we do still have to charge for train travel).

Volunteers from across the railway will be on hand to host guided behind the scenes tours of our workshop and engine sheds, and tell you a little more about their roles. There’ll be the opportunity to register your interest as a prospective volunteer, or sign up as a member and support the railway with a regular contribution – either way you’ll be helping keep us on track!

We’re pleased to welcome the Bodmin & Wenford Railway Trust for this Heritage Open Day event. They’ll be bringing a selection of documents and items from their archive to give visitors a very rare chance to see some of their collection up close. The Trust will be on hand to answer questions about their archive and the work they do to preserve and restore the railway’s locomotives. You can also find out how your donations to the Trust are vital to preserving our railway heritage, and of course you can donate on the day.

There’ll be a steam engine running along with our diesel Bubblecar, one of the newest additions to the railway. Departure times from Bodmin General are 11:05 (steam), 12:10 (Bubblecar), 14:15 (Bubblecar) and 15:15 (steam).

Please note: we won’t be able to offer tours of our Parkway Shed on this date.

Tickets:
It’s free to come and meet our volunteer team and explore behind the scenes at the railway on these dates, including guided tours and access to our workshop (although donations are always welcome!).

Additionally, you can buy tickets for travel on the day from the booking office at Bodmin General, or with cash from the ticket inspector on the train. Explore six and a half miles of track with a Freedom of the Line ticket - pay once and travel all day!
