Diesel Gala

Event Date: 21st September 2018- 22nd September 2018

This year our Diesel Gala runs over two days, for even more trains, over even more trips for even more thrash - so get it in your diary!

The intensive timetable for the Gala includes plenty of mileage behind our locos, and we are excited to say that for this weekend only we have a DB class 67 visiting. We don't need to tell you that class 67's are rare visitors to heritage railways, so don't miss your chance to get up close and personal!

New for 2018: we’re delighted to be hosting the Steamer’s Real Ale bar as part of the Diesel Gala this year. A popular fixture at our Steam Galas, they’ll be bringing a splendid selection of Real Ales along and setting up the bar on the platform for the two days of the Gala. Make sure you stop by for a pint or two! The bar will be open 10am to 11pm on both Friday and Saturday (they’ll also be open on the Sunday following the Gala too).

Friday night Fish, Chips & Freight train, 21st September 7pm
On Friday evening we’ll be running freight trains with brake vans including a fish and chip supper – perfect to be enjoyed with a pint or two from our Real Ale Bar. Tickets for this should be booked separately at £10 each.

Saturday morning Freight Photo Charter, 22nd September 8am
On Saturday morning we are pleased to be running an early morning freight photo charter. Spaces are limited and should be booked in advance. Tickets are £12.50.

Light Engine Driver Experiences
There are a limited number of slots available over the Gala for light engine driver experiences. These cost £50 per person and should be booked in advance. These always prove popular so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Rail Rover: Western Ranger & Cornish Traction: book launch and signing, 22nd September, 1pm-4pm

Cornish Traction, book coverWe are delighted to welcome author Stephen Heginbotham who will be joining us to speak to visitors and sign copies of his book Cornish Traction, which aims to bring back memories of traction once common, or not so common, on the rails of the Duchy of Cornwall. Published by Amberley, the book went straight on to their best sellers list. The event will also see the launch of Stephen’s latest book Rail Rover: Western Ranger which takes you back to an era when carefree excursions to Devon and Cornwall were commonplace, and train travel was more relaxed and an adventure, yet more civilised, with a stunning location at the end of the line.

We're thrilled that our very own David Letcher, who contributed many of the images for Stephen's books will be joining Stephen for the signing. Stephen and David will be available at Bodmin General Station on 22nd September between 1pm and 4pm. There is no charge to attend the signing event. Copies of the books will be on sale from our shop.

Stephen says, “It has been a pleasure to showcase the excellent photographs of David Letcher and my some of my former

railway colleagues and friends in my latest books featuring Cornwall and the

West Country.  I hope these books take you back to a time when the railway was, in my opinion, more interesting than it is presently.

Come and have a chat with me at the Gala about my long and interesting career on British Railways, Railtrack and Network Rail, as a Signalman in Derbyshire and Cornwall and then my twenty-one years as Signalling Inspector/MOM/Incident Officer for Cornwall & Devon.

Future books will feature Western National, Industrial Steam, Devon Traction, End of Steam in the North West and The Demise of the Woodhead Route. If anyone out there has a collection of good quality railway photographs or buses, that you think I could compile into a book, for presentation to one of my publishers, I’d love to hear from you.”

Buy Gala tickets for travel on the day from the booking office at Bodmin General, or with cash from the ticket inspector on the train. Pay once and travel all day, or take advantage of a discounted two-day ticket and join us for the whole Gala.
