Watering Facilities at Bodmin Parkway

Watering Facilities at Bodmin Parkway

Published: 7th May 2013

The Bodmin And Wenford Railway together with its volunteer organisation the Bodmin Rail Preservation Society are pleased to announce a development plan to return steam locomotive watering facilities to Bodmin Road/Parkway station. A Braithwaite water tank has been located, and negotiations for its transfer to the B&WR are at an advanced stage with its current owners. The search is now on to locate a water crane as the preferred means for trackside delivery. This will be situated not on the platform but just beyond the ground frame controlling the run round loop at the western end of the B&WR site.
Watering facilities at Parkway will greatly enhance operational capability on the railway, particularly with smaller engines (Beattie 2-4-0 well tank no. 30587 and Port of Par 0-4-0 saddle tanks Alfred and Judy) facing the fierce three mile climb back to Bodmin General.
Attached is a picture (by Bernard Mills) of the original GWR watering facility at the up end of platforms 2 and 3 at Bodmin Road. It is believed to be a unique structure, best described as water tank with a cantilevered chute. The concrete base is still evident today.

If readers can assist in finding a water crane, or any plans thereof, we would be glad to hear from you.

Jimmy James,
